What to Look for When Hiring an Electrician in the UK

Hiring the wrong electrician is not just expensive - it can be dangerous and illegal. Uncertified electrical work can invalidate your home insurance, fail a buyer's survey, and in the worst cases cause fires or electrocution. Yet the UK has no blanket licensing requirement for electricians, which means anyone can technically call themselves one.

This guide covers exactly what to check before hiring any electrician in the UK, and what each qualification actually means in practice.

The most important thing: are they registered under a competent person scheme?

In England, Wales and Scotland, certain types of electrical work are notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations. This includes installing new circuits, replacing a consumer unit, and adding outdoor wiring. Only electricians registered under a government-approved competent person scheme can legally self-certify this work. The two main schemes are:

  • NICEIC (National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation Contracting) - the most widely recognised scheme in the UK. Contractors are assessed annually against BS 7671.
  • NAPIT (National Association of Professional Inspectors and Testers) - another government-authorised scheme, widely used for domestic and commercial electrical work.
  • ELECSA - also government-authorised, covers domestic electrical and heating work.

If an electrician is not registered with one of these schemes, they cannot legally self-certify notifiable work. You would need to apply for a Building Regulations approval yourself, which adds cost and delay. Always check registration before booking.

Anyone can call themselves an electrician in the UK. Checking NICEIC or NAPIT registration takes 30 seconds and protects you from uncertified work that could invalidate your insurance.

Key qualifications to check

  • City & Guilds 2382 (18th Edition Wiring Regulations BS 7671) - the current wiring standard. Any qualified electrician should hold this.
  • City & Guilds 2391 or 2394/2395 - inspection and testing qualifications. Required for anyone carrying out an EICR.
  • ECS Gold Card - the standard competency card for qualified electricians. Check it is current and matches the work being done.
  • AM2 assessment - the industry practical test that proves hands-on competence.

Insurance - do not skip this check

All electricians working in your home or property should carry public liability insurance. This covers damage to your property caused during the work. Without it, you have very limited recourse if something goes wrong. Ask for a copy of their insurance certificate before work begins - any reputable electrician will provide this without hesitation.

For larger commercial projects, employers' liability insurance and professional indemnity insurance may also be relevant.

Red flags to watch out for

  • Offering to do the job without a certificate or inspection report
  • Asking for a large cash payment upfront with no paperwork
  • Unable to provide a registration number you can verify online
  • No written quote - only a verbal estimate
  • Unwilling to show proof of insurance
  • Quoting significantly below all other electricians (often a sign of unqualified work)
